What Is Diathermy and How Is It Used for Skin Lesion Removal?

Diathermy, also known as thermocoagulation, is the precision treatment we use at The Skin Lab Killarney for skin lesion removal. It uses rapid radiofrequency energy to target and remove common skin imperfections, including thread veins, skin tags, cherry angiomas, milia and broken capillaries, with minimal discomfort and no downtime.

We use the Apilus device, an advanced system that delivers high-frequency current through a fine precision tip. This allows us to treat the individual lesion or imperfection accurately, without affecting the surrounding skin.

How Skin Lesion Removal Works

At The Skin Lab Killarney, skin lesion removal is carried out using precision diathermy. A very fine needle or probe delivers a controlled burst of radiofrequency energy to the specific lesion or imperfection being removed.

This creates targeted heat in the area, allowing the concern to be treated with precision while leaving the surrounding healthy skin unaffected.

For thread veins and spider veins: The heat seals the tiny blood vessel, causing it to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body over the following weeks.

For skin tags: The heat cuts off blood supply to the tag, causing it to dry up and fall off naturally.

For cherry angiomas: The heat destroys the abnormal blood vessel cluster, which then fades away.

For milia: The heat allows the trapped keratin to be released and the skin to heal flat.

The precision of the Apilus device means only the targeted imperfection is treated - surrounding healthy skin remains unaffected.

    What to Expect From Your Skin Lesion Removal Treatment

    A typical skin lesion removal treatment takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on the concern being treated and the number of areas involved. Most clients need 1–2 sessions to achieve the desired result.

    Before treatment, a thorough skin consultation is carried out to assess the area, confirm suitability and explain the procedure, possible side effects and aftercare.

    During treatment, a very fine needle or probe is used to target the specific skin imperfection. Controlled energy is delivered to the area, allowing the lesion or imperfection to be treated with precision while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected.

    For thread veins and spider veins, the treatment seals the tiny blood vessel. Over the following weeks, the vein withers and disperses, becoming much less noticeable or disappearing completely.

    Immediately after treatment, you may see a visible improvement in the treated area. The skin may be pink or slightly puffy in more sensitive areas, but this usually settles within a few hours.

    The healing process then begins, with final results becoming visible around 4–6 weeks after treatment. There is no downtime for most clients, and you can return to normal activities straight away.

    Skin lesion removal can be used on all skin types. If you have any concerns, a discreet patch test can be carried out first.

      When Skin Lesion Removal May Not Be Suitable

      Skin lesion removal may not be suitable for everyone. Before treatment, we will assess the area and review any relevant medical history to confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for you.

      Treatment may not be suitable if you have:

      • Keloid or raised scarring on targeted area
      • History of actinic (solar) keratosis
      • History of Herpes
      • Simplex infections
      • History of diabetes
      • Presence of raised moles, warts or any raised lesions on the targeted area

      This treatment cannot be carried out in the presence of scleroderma, collagen vascular diseases, cardiac abnormalities, rosacea, blood clotting problems, active bacterial or fungal infection, immunosuppression, scars less than 6 months old, facial fillers less than 6 months old, pregnancy, prescription blood thinning medication or metallic implants.

      Any mole, lesion or skin change that is new, changing, bleeding, crusting or causing concern should be assessed by a doctor before cosmetic treatment is considered.

      Recovery After Skin Lesion Removal

      After skin lesion removal, the treated area may look pink or slightly puffy, especially in more sensitive areas. This usually settles within a few hours. Cool compresses may be applied if needed.

      Small dry patches or light crusting may develop around the treated area as the skin heals. This should be left to settle naturally.

      Treated thread veins can sometimes look as though they have reappeared during the healing process. This is normal. They gradually fade and dissolve in a similar way to how the body reabsorbs bruises.

      The healing process can take 10–28 days, depending on the concern treated, the area of the body and your skin’s sensitivity.

      If milia are treated, they may be gently exfoliated away 24–48 hours after treatment. If skin tags are treated, they may form a dark crust and should be left alone to heal. The skin may have a pale tinge when the scab drops off.

      Appropriate skincare will be recommended on the day of your treatment to support healing, protect the skin and enhance your final result.
