What Happens During a Chemical Peel?

Every skin peels begins with a thorough consultation concentrating on helping you understand the procedure, possible side effects, and the importance of after care. Your peel is then chosen specifically for your skin type and skin concerns whilst taking into consideration your skin’s colour and tanning ability.

After a thorough cleansing the skin is prepped and the chosen skin peel is applied. Once the peel has been on the desired length of time, it is then neutralised. A cooling hyaluronic acid based gel is applied to soothe and hydrate the skin. A tolerable burning or stinging sensation may be felt during the application of the peel.

Note: Prior to a peel, the skin will need to be prepared with certain products for a minimum of two weeks to ensure optimum and predictable results are achieved. Long term results and skin health are achieved by a course of skin peels, advanced clinical facials and are accompanied by a preventative, corrective and protective homecare programme.

What Is the Downtime After a Chemical Peel?

The reaction of the skin post treatment will depend on the type of peel chosen. You may notice that the skin is more red and feels tighter than usual for up to two hours afterwards. The skin may feel tight or dry and you may experience mild flaking in certain areas for a few days. Rarely, you may experience crusting of the skin or slight swelling.

Appropriate skincare will be recommended on the day of your treatment to help accelerate the healing process, protect the skin from the environment and enhance your desired results. Your normal skincare programme can be resumed after day 3, with more active products being introduced after day 5 or when the skin has returned to normal.

Note: A reactivation of cold sores is possible so please see your Doctor for a course of prophylactic medication prior to skin peel.

Chemical peels are considered safe when performed by a qualified professional.

Chemical peel is a skin resurfacing procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the top layer of the skin and reveal fresh, rejuvenated skin.

Depending on the peel, the procedure can take 30-60 minutes. Around 48-72hrs after the treatment your skin will start peeling. The peeling may last between 2 and 5 days.

Chemical peels can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Depending on the severity of those fine lines and wrinkles, multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results.

One week before your peel, avoid any waxing or laser hair removal treatments. 48hrs before the treatment stop using any active ingredients such as retinoids, acids or benzoyl peroxide. If in doubt, speak to your therapist.

It is best to let your skin heal for at least 2 weeks after microneedling.

Not all peels will remove blackheads. Choose BHA (salicylic acid) peels to unclog your pores. Speak to your chemical peel therapist if you have any questions on the right peel treatment for you.

Chemical peels can reduce the signs of ageing. By removing damaged skin cells, this then allows new healthy skin cells to grow in their place.
