Are Anti-Wrinkle Injections the same as Botox?

There is no difference between anti–wrinkle injectables and Botox. Botox is a brand name.

WHAT IS IT?

Anti wrinkle injections are a muscle relaxant medicine and are used for the the treatment of wrinkles by injection. Injected into a muscle, it will reduce excessive contractions of that muscle thus preventing fine lines on becoming deep set. It is a very safe treatment, however it is very important to choose a reputable and highly qualified doctor.

HOW LONG BEFORE IT TAKES EFFECT?

Post treatment, the medication usually starts to take effect between 2-4 days and reach full effect by 14 days.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Depending on the site of treatment. The average time before you will need to return for a top up is approximately 3-5 months, exept in the masseter/jaw muscle where it lasts 6-9 months.

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

The most common treatment areas for wrinkle reduction are crow’s feet (lines around the outer eyes), glabella (between the eyes) and the forehead. Other areas including ‘bunny lines’ (lines on the nose), jaw-line, chin and neck may also be treated. Muscle relaxants can even be used to treat excessive sweating and jaw grinding.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOCTOR?

Avoid practitioners who have no training or have only completed a short training course. Make sure the person doing your anti wrinkle injections is suitably qualified and experienced. They should be a medical practitioner and on a register to show they meet set standards in training, skill and insurance.

When you meet the practitioner, ask about:

  • their training, qualifications and experience
  • the name of the product, if it’s licensed, and how and where it’s made
  • any risks or possible side effects
  • what will happen if things go wrong
  • what insurance cover they have

WHEN YOU CANNOT HAVE ANTI WRINKLE INJECTIONS?

In certain circumstances, anti wrinkle injections are not recommended, including if:

  • you have a skin infection
  • you’re unwell in any way
  • you have a neuromuscular condition
  • you’re taking certain medicines
  • you’re pregnant or breastfeeding

RISKS

The risks from anti wrinkle injections are small if it’s done correctly by a qualified practitioner. Speak to your practitioner about the risks.

After treatment you may have:

  • a headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
  • bruising, swelling and redness where the needles went in the skin
  • a frozen look – you might not be able to move the muscles in your face if too much anti wrinkle injection is injected
  • temporary weakness and droopiness in your face – for example, your eyelids or eyebrows may droop if the anti wrinkle injection moves into these areas

Very rarely, serious problems such as blurred or double vision can happen if the area around the eyes is treated, or breathing difficulties if the neck area is injected.

IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE?

Currently the age for anti wrinkle injections in Ireland is 18. However, we don’t recommend anti wrinkle injections under 21.
