Skin tag removal in Kerry – 98% success rate!
Did you know that skin tags even though harmless can be an indicator of a health issue? To find out read more.
1. What are skin tags?
According to Medical News Today, skin tag is "small piece of soft, hanging skin that may have a peduncle, or stalk. They can appear anywhere on the body, but especially where skin rubs against other skin or clothing." Skin tags are very common and develop in both women and men especially as they age. They tend to develop in:
- older people – in 46% of people over 40, growing to 59% by 70
- obese people -where excess folds of skin chafe against each other
- pregnant women due to hormonal changes
The surface of skin tags may be smooth or irregular in appearance. They are often raised from the surface of the skin on fleshy peduncles, or stalks. They are usually flesh-colored or slightly brownish.
Skin tags start small, flattened like a pinhead bump. Some stay small, and some grow bigger. They can range in diameter from 2 millimeters (mm) to 1 centimeter (cm), and some may reach 5cm.
2. Skin tags and Insulin Resistance
A 2010 study showed that the presence of multiple skin tags was strongly associated with insulin resistance. Research also shows that those with skin tags have higher cholesterol, higher blood sugar and a higher level of fat in the blood (triglycerides) all of which are risk factors for both diabetes and coronary disease. 3. How can you prevent skin tags?
Although there are no guaranteed ways to prevent skin tags, you can reduce the chance of occurrence by losing weight and re-evaluating your diet.
4. What not to do
Do not try DIY skin tag removal or home remedies for skin tag removal! It can lead to scarring, skin irritation, bleeding, infection and permanent skin damage. Only a professional should first examine skin tags and choose the appropriate way of skin tag removal.
Some people believe that removing skin tags causes them to grow more, but this is a myth and there is no evidence that removing skin tags encourages more of them to develop.
