Dehydration

Skin Advice

Dehydration

Dehydration can affect every skin type and every age, especially those with dry skin.

Skin dehydration is the loss of water in the skin and occurs when the skin loses more moisture than it takes in.

Dehydration often leads to thinning of the skin, promotes the development of fine lines, wrinkles, crow’s feet.

Being dehydrated can change the appearance of your skin and it may appear flushed, dry, and older looking. The dehydrated skin loses its elasticity and radiance.

Dehydrated Skin FAQs

No! Dehydrated skin lacks water and dry skin lacks oil. So your skin could be dehydrated, dry, or both.

Dehydrated skin can look oily, flaky, dull and feel tight, even when properly moisturised.

Hydration means increasing the amount of water in your skin cells, which results in a healthy, smooth and plump complexion.

Moisturising prevents the water from leaving our skin by sealing it all in with a lipid (facial oil).

Dehydrated skin should always be hydrated first with a serum that contains humectants, which help to bind and retain moisture.

For dehydrated skin it is best to avoid cosmetic products containing alcohol, such as alcohol based toners or cleansers, and go easy on the exfoliation.

YES! Low fat diets can deprive our bodies of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). Essential fatty acids are vital to help cells retain water. There are two basic types of EFAs-omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids, and we need them both.

EFAs are important structural components of cell membranes throughout the body. They help cells stay fluid and flexible, allowing nutrients to enter the cells and wastes to exit.

EFA metabolites also “waterproof” the skin, creating an antimicrobial barrier against the elements. Without enough EFAs, your skin can suffer from dryness and premature aging.
